Apologies for not posting something up earlier to share in the relief that many of you must have felt during the announcement by Windsor and Oakeshott. I truly feel like we have dodged a bullet, but to borrow another clichéd phrase, I also feel like we have only won the battle and not the war. Possum penned an excellent piece the other day, espousing what he feels the next period will hold in politics – it’s well worth a read. I wholeheartedly agree with him. I find it incredible that Gillard has managed to triumph in the face of so much media bias. Many people have commented to me that it felt a little like the time of Gough’s dismissal in 1975. It was Rupert then who strived to bring down Gough, and it was Rupe again today who tried his damn hardest to bring down Rudd/Gillard Labor. This time he failed, but for how long I wonder?
It is clear that the ABC is effectively neutered at present. Hopefully Gillard will make some serious changes there – the rest of the board is up for re-appointment over the next year or so. I wholly expect her to pay serious attention to this issue, considering her comments today on media bias – check the bottom section of this article.
At this point I’d like to say thank you to all of the contributors who penned articles for the Daily Bludge up to this point. I’m focused on some business ventures at the moment with the intent of forming something a little more substantial than the Daily Bludge in the not-too-distant future. I wonder whether the Rupert effect is in fact true. I mean, yes, he did poison the media – with the sterling help of Mark Scott’s ABC (boy I can’t wait for the heads to start rolling next year)- but is there any reliable research that proves a causative link with the result ?
It’s not an unreasonable guess that it did, but I think it might just be intuition more so than fact.
I suppose on the positive side, each election – is another step closer to Hades for Rupe – and I wonder what will happen to the Empire when he carks it. I don’t have News shares and don’t particularly cares.
But for now, I’m enjoying the “Anybody but Abbott” world and I’m hoping against all odds that Julia and the boys rip in and do a more convincing job this time. Here’s hoping.
